Diary or journal with descriptions of family and friends; teaching school, farming, and starting a shoe-making business; social life, including visiting, house raisings, corn huskings, sleighing, apple butter boilings, cider pressings, quiltings, threshings, weddings, vendues [household and property sales]. Mentions numerous Baptist, Methodist, and Friends meetings; attendance at prayer meetings, bush meetings, camp meetings, Sabbath schools, and singing schools. Includes detailed descriptions of the weather, the aurora borealis, snowfalls, and storms; marriages, deaths, births, illnesses, injuries, a suicide and a hanging. Also describes hunting, hunting accidents, lawsuits, elections, a circus in Schellsburg, and road building. He describes pedlars, and peddles books himself, and includes a list of the books in his library. There is some original poetry, and poetry copied from various sources. Diary includes financial accounts and records of property sales.

William Albaugh was born on November 23, 1822. He was a schoolteacher, shoemaker, farmer, clerk, and tax collector living near Bedford and Schellsburg, Bedford County, Pa.
